Community

Sacramento Gold Mining Co. LTD strives to build trust with stakeholders through proactive, transparent, and inclusive engagement. We seek to develop and maintain long-term relationships with host communities based on trust and integrity.

As a Company, we are required to be transparent about our achievements and challenges. We publish a yearly sustainability report which aligns with our values of safety, integrity, sustainability, inclusion and responsibility.

Minera Peñasquito interacts with 25 neighboring communities that are within our area of direct influence, distributed across three municipalities of the State of Zacatecas: Mazapil, Concepción del Oro and Melchor Ocampo, which collectively total more than 5,000 inhabitants.

Our social responsibility strategy is aligned with 11 of the 17 sustainable development goals 2030 promoted by the United Nations (UN). We have established 10 partnerships with civil society organizations, along with educational and governmental institutions in the region.

Below are examples of the community programs that we continue to work on to create value and improve lives:

Community Care and Response System: This program aims to receive and provide a timely response to inquiries, requests and concerns arising from the possible impacts that our operations may have on neighboring communities.

Employment and Development of Local Skills: We have implemented training programs to develop local skills among the inhabitants of the region to help them develop the required skills to join our workforce in the short term.

Social Investment Programs: These are divided into the following  four strategic areas: 

1. Social and educational development:
   • Scholarships for Primary Education to the University level, for students with outstanding school performance.
   • Peñasquito Open Doors (“Peñasquito Puertas Abiertas”), program for school and community tours that allow the inhabitants of neighboring communities to learn about our operations. For more information about this program, please contact: maria.degasperin@newmont.com.
   • Sports Academies for children, youth and adults in which we promote the practice of baseball, soccer, basketball and volleyball.
   • Construction and equipment of the Conalep to help reduce school dropout rate in the region.
   • Train teachers of elementary education to acquire didactic strategies that help them improve their practice in schools.
   • Providing school furniture and educational material to the schools in neighboring communities so that the children and teenagers have better learning tools.
   • Supporting the corporate volunteer program that our employees and contractors participate in together with our communities, to promote festivities such as Children's Day and Christmas.

2. Economic development in the region:
   • "Valuable Ideas" program, through which we strengthen and develop micro-businesses in our neighboring communities.
   • Local suppliers so that small and medium sized businesses within our area of direct influence can be included in the company's value chain.

3. Environmental development:
   • Participatory Water Monitoring as a collaborative process between the company and the community to collect and analyze data on water quality.
   • Reforest school and common areas together with the members of our communities to preserve the flora of the region.

4. Community Infrastructure Provided:
   • 1 health clinic built and equipped
   • 4 automated reverse osmosis water treatment plants
   • 19 elevated water tanks with a capacity of 40m³
   • 1 kilometer of a potable water distribution network and 42 household outlets
   • 5 watering ponds
   • 11 wells for irrigation drilled and equipped
   • 1 well drilled and 2 rehabilitated for human consumption
   • 1 water purification plant
   • 1 community square of 1,120 m²
   • 1 nursery for reforestation and 1 UMA
   • 2 multipurpose rooms
   • 3 sports courts
   • 12 educational works that included the construction and equipment of classrooms, breakfast cafeterias and houses for teachers

More than 80 community initiatives that include:

• Rehabilitation of roads, community spaces, churches and sports fields
• Installation of power lines, perimeter fences and livestock gates
• Home improvement support
• Construction of community kitchens, drainage lines and septic tanks, guard rails, curbs and pumps for water extraction

As a result of the relationship established with neighboring communities, we have been recognized for:

• Socially Responsible Company (SRC) granted by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy for 12 consecutive years (for more information review our Results 2019).
• Honorable Mention of the Valuable Ideas (“Ideas con Valor”) program in 2018 as a best business practice, awarded by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy
• 2017 Global Excellence Award for our education strategy
• 2016 Global Excellence Award for the "Peñasquito Open Doors" program
